The Vedas (Sanskrit वेदाः véda, "knowledge") are a large body of texts originating in ancient India. Composto em sânscrito védico, os textos constituem a camada mais antiga da literatura sânscrita e as mais antigas escrituras do hinduísmo.
The Vedas are said to be apauruṣeya ("not of human agency").They are supposed to have been directly revealed, and thus are called śruti ("what is heard"), distinguishing them from other religious texts, which are called smṛti ("what is remembered").
Os textos védicos ou śruti são organizados em torno de quatro coleções canônicas de material métrico conhecido como saṃhitās, dos quais os três primeiros estão relacionados ao desempenho de Yajna (sacrifício) na religião védica histórica:
1) O Rigveda, ou Rig Veda, contêm hinos a serem recitados pelo hotar, ou padre presidido;
2) O Yajurveda, ou Yajur Veda, contém a liturgia (mantras) necessária para realizar os sacrifícios do Veda, e os Brahmana e Shrautasutra adicionados adicionam informações sobre a interpretação e os detalhes de seu desempenho.
Existem duas versões primárias ou samhitas do Yajurveda: Shukla (branco) e Krishna (preto). Ambos contêm os versos necessários para os rituais, mas o Krishna Yajurveda inclui as discussões em prosa de Brahmana misturadas no Samhita, enquanto o Shukla Yajurveda tem um texto de Brahmana separadamente, o Shatapatha Brahmana.
3) The Sama Veda, Samveda, or Samaveda (Sanskrit: सामवेदः, sāmaveda, from sāman "melody" and veda "knowledge"), is a collection (samhita) of hymns, portions of hymns, and detached verses, all but 75 taken from the Sakala Sakha of the Rigveda, the other 75 belong to the Bashkala Sakha, para ser cantado, usando melodias indicadas especificamente chamadas Samagana, por sacerdotes de Udgatar em sacrifícios nos quais o suco da planta de soma, esclarecido e misturado com leite e outros ingredientes, é oferecido em libação a várias divindades.
4) The fourth is the Atharvaveda, a collection of spells and incantations, apotropaic charms and speculative hymns.
The individual verses contained in these compilations are known as mantras. Some selected vedic mantras are still recited at prayers, religious functions and other auspicious occasions in contemporary Hinduism.
The various Indian philosophies and sects have taken differing positions on the Vedas . Schools of Indian philosophy which cite the Vedas as their scriptural authority are classified as "orthodox" (āstika).
